driver version. Before proceeding, you might want to check whether a

1. Release notes
----------------

Version 2.1.10.1
   This version was signed for Windows Server 2003.
   The same binaries can be used for installation on Windows 2000 and Windows XP.
   It is specifically designed for the GEMPLUS GemPC400 device.

2. Pre-requisites
-----------------

To execute the following task, you need administrator rights
for the workstation.

This installation requires that the Microsoft Smart Card Manager be
started.

Note: All Microsoft Smart Card Manager components are already 
installed with Windows 2000.
DO NOT INSTALL THE SCBASE.EXE OR SMCLIB.EXE COMPONENTS provided with
a previous version of Microsoft Windows or Installer packages.

To check the status of the Microsoft Smart Card Manager:
   * Start the Computer Management Console by right-clicking the
     "My Computer" desktop icon and select the "Manage" item in the
     menu.
   * Select and open the "Services and Application" group in the list.
   * Double-Click "Services".
   * Double-click "Smart Card".
   * The service status should be "Started" and the startup type
     should be "Automatic" 

If this is not the case,
   * Choose "Automatic" in the "Startup Type" drop-down list, then
   * Click the  button to start the service.

You can now close the Computer Management Console.

In the remainder of this file, it is assumed that you know how to
start the Device Manager. 
To do so:
   * Right-click the "My Computer" desktop icon and pick the
     "Properties" item in the menu.
   * Select the "Hardware" tab and click "Device Manager...".

4. Smart card interface driver use
-----------------------------------

   4.1. Driver installation

      This PC-CARD device is Plug and Play; you can plug it any time.
   
      4.1.1. Installation

         Because Windows 2000 comes with a limited version of this
         driver, installation should take place in two steps:
         the first installs the default driver, and the second updates
         the system with this new driver.

         For the first step, connect the reader to the computer. 
         Everything then takes place automatically.
 
         Now update the system:
         Right-click the "My Computer" icon on the desktop,
         Select "Properties" and select the "Hardware" tab,
         Press the  button,
         Double-click the "Smart card readers" group,
         Double-click "GEMPLUS GemPC400 PCMCIA Smart Card Reader",
         Select the "Driver" tab
         Click 
         Click 
         Select "Display a list of the known drivers for this device 
         so that I can choose a specific driver", and click 
         Click 
         Browse to the location of the driver files (the directory
         in which the readme file was located) and 
         click  then 
         Select "GEMPLUS GemPC400 PCMCIA Smart Card Reader", and 
         click 
         The Wizard is ready to install the driver, click .
         Click  to close the Microsoft Device Driver Wizard.


      4.1.2. Check your installation

         Open the Device Manager.
         Double-click "GEMPLUS GemPC400 PCMCIA Smart Card
         Reader" in the "Smart card readers" group
         Select the "Driver" tab
	 Check that the "Driver version" matches the version
         for this file.


   4.2. Driver update

      4.2.1. Update

         Right-click the "My Computer" icon on the desktop.
         Select "Properties" and select the "Hardware" tab.
         Press the  button.
         Double-click the "Smart card readers" group.
         Double-click "GEMPLUS GemPC400 PCMCIA Smart Card Reader".
         Select the "Driver" tab.
         Click .
         Click .
         Select "Display a list of the known drivers for this device 
         so that I can choose a specific driver", and click 
         Click .
         Browse to the location of the driver files in the directory
         in which the readme file was located and 
         click  then .
         Select "GEMPLUS GemPC400 PCMCIA Smart Card Reader", and 
         click .
         The Wizard is ready to install the driver, click .
         Click  to close the Microsoft Device Driver Wizard.

         
      4.2.2. Check your update

         Open the Device Manager.
         Double-click "GEMPLUS GemPC400 PCMCIA Smart Card Reader"
	 in the "Smart card readers" group.
         Select the "Driver" tab.
	 Check that the "Driver version" matches the version for
         this file.


   4.3. Driver removal

      4.3.1. Remove

         Open the Device Manager.
         Double-click "GEMPLUS GemPC400 PCMCIA Smart Card
         Reader" in the "Smart card readers" group.
         Select the "Driver" tab.
         Click .
         When prompted, confirm the operation by clicking .
         When this operation is finished, disconnect the reader.


      4.3.2. Check the removal
         
         Open the Device Manager.
         Either 
            The "SmartCardReader" group no longer appears
            and no reader is available on the computer screen
         Or
            Double-click the "SmartCardReader" group,
            Verify that "GEMPLUS GemPC400 PCMCIA Serial Smart Card
            Reader" is no longer displayed.


5 - User notes (known deviations)
---------------------------------

* After a successful uninstall, if you plug the device back in, the 
  system  keeps traces of the previous installation. To remove it,  
  search in "%WINDIR%\inf" directory for files beginning with 
  oemXX.inf and oemXX.pnf.
  Look for "GEMPLUS GemPC400 PCMCIA Smart Card Reader" in one of those
  oemXX.inf. files. Then remove this file and the corresponding
  compiled oemxx.pnf.

Note: If driver was installed through GemPC400.msi package, it can be uninstalled 
*completely* with add/remove programs wizard.

6. Troubleshooting
-------------------

If the previously described procedure fails to instal or update the
driver, please:

1- Open the Device Manager, 
   Click the "Smart card readers" group and
   Check the state of the "GEMPLUS GemPC400 PCMCIA Smart Card Reader".
   If a cross appears, or a Yellow bang "!", select the reader, 
   Click "Properties" in the menu. 
   Tick the line "Disable in this material profile" in the checkbox.
   Then contact the Gemplus support.
